Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss

When choosing a weight loss program, it is important to select something that can be maintained long term. The ketogenic diet for weight loss is helpful because it is not only satiating and allows the dieter to consume delicious foods, but it also addresses, and in most cases, fixes the root cause of most weight gain — hormone imbalance.

Hormone imbalance will affect the way that the body uses insulin, so someone could be exercising and eating a reasonable diet while still not getting the results that they want.

If hormones are out of whack, specifically blood sugar and insulin, this not only affects the way that the body stores fat, but the likelihood of overeating is higher due to inaccurate hunger signals telling the body to eat when it does not actually need nutrients.

Why We Get Fat: Insulin and Fat Storage

Insulin is a hormone that is released in the body as a response to a fluctuation in blood sugar, also known as blood glucose. When blood glucose goes up, the pancreas releases insulin so that the glucose in the bloodstream is transported into the cells where it can be used for fuel.

When glucose is available for the cells to use, they will choose it first, before burning stored fat.  If the cells in the body are already full of glucose and can’t absorb any more, the body converts the extra energy into fatty acids, and stores it in fat cells.

Normally, the body would go back and use this stored fat for fuel when food is not available. However, when insulin levels are chronically high, the fat stored in the cells cannot be broken down and used for energy. This means that high insulin levels will keep the fat stored, and the body will be reliant on glucose only as a source of fuel.

The body is not able to store much glycogen (a group of glucose molecules) so when it is unable to get to its fat stores due to high insulin, it becomes dependent on glucose energy from food.

This could result in feelings of extreme or constant hunger and often binge eating if the person goes without food for too long.

What Causes Insulin to Increase?

Chronically high carbohydrate consumption.

Carbohydrates get broken down in the gut and then turned into blood sugar. Whether the carb is simple or complex, both types will eventually be broken down into blood sugar in the body.

When high levels of carbohydrates are eaten, then the body has to release a lot of insulin to move the excess sugar to the cells. The cells become overwhelmed with insulin, and there is no place to store the extra glucose. The cells start to refuse the insulin and become “insulin resistant.” The excess glucose is still piling up so the insulin must go and store the extra glucose in the fat cells as fatty acids. When the fat cells get full, they start to refuse insulin too, and blood sugar starts to build up in the bloodstream.

At this point, the person is probably experiencing symptoms of metabolic syndrome, which could include high blood pressure, weight gain, especially around the middle, high triglycerides, and elevated cholesterol.

High blood sugar can lead to a diabetes diagnosis, so it is very important to be proactive and seek a weight loss program that lowers blood sugar and insulin. The ketogenic diet has been used successfully by many because it does both of these things.

Low carbohydrate intake on a ketogenic diet allows cells to retain insulin sensitivity. When hormones are in balance, hunger decreases, and the cells can use fat for fuel which provides more energy. The body can access its stored fat, you lose weight, and you have lots of fuel for activity. Exercising becomes easier because you are able to burn fat for fuel efficiently.

Overall, low carbohydrate intake keeps blood sugar and insulin levels in a normal range and makes it possible to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
